One of the most common questions I field from fledgling and established entrepreneurs alike, is how do you overcome the fear of sales? And my initial gut reaction is typically to suggest, stop selling. Yes. Stop Selling.
I haven't given a sales presentation in over a decade. Instead I encourage fellow entrepreneurs to consider the following.
1. When you are passionate about a subject matter, you really don't feel like you're selling. Share content about topics that you're obsessed with. When you're speaking about anything you're an ardent believer in, you very rarely feel like you're selling. Think about that last good dining experience, book, or movie you discussed with a family member or friend. It felt natural and authentic. Speak from the heart with good intention. 2. Be clear about your purpose. Is it to educate and allow others to make the best decision for themselves? Or are you hunting for a transaction? Is your purpose to solve a problem or to manufacture value? Intention is everything. If you believe in your work, services, or product..... trust the process.
3. Here's a secret. People don't know you're giving a "bad" presentation, because they haven't heard your presentation before. In other words, if you're rocking back and forth out of nervousness, the listener or viewer may actually interpret it as you being an expressive, energetic person. In other words, unless you volunteer that you are scared out of your mind or giving a "bad" presentation, your prospect isn't the wiser most of the time. Just like any skilled trade, preparation and practice will improve your performance over time.
